REVIEW : DEVOUR (PC)ĭEVOUR is similar to other “find and collect” horror games, such as the Slender series and its clones, in gameplay. In that aspect, I believe the game is a huge success, and I can overlook the lack of a storey. But this is a game where the storey takes a back seat, emphasising the gameplay and the terror you and your buddies are stuck in. Lore and gameplay instructions are mixed in pre-possession Anna’s journal entries, which explain the storey of her steady descent. You and up to three pals must now perform a ritual to exorcise the demon, survive, and avoid being carried to hell by the possessed cult leader. Anna has been possessed as a result of the ceremony. Anna vanished after completing a ceremony supposed to connect her to the cult’s patron, the demon Azazel. You play as one of four cultists who have travelled to an abandoned house in the middle of nowhere in quest of Anna, the cult’s leader. This game is affordable, with a price tag under $5 at the moment.DEVOUR’s tale is brief, but it does the job of kicking off the experience. The last thing I have to mention is the incredible price. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but it could get a little “samey” after a while. It also feels like this game is using the same asset and style as other games like Phasmophobia, In Silence, and the like. I’m not sure I’d recommend to play it alone, however. Overall the game is good, and it’s a ton of laughs when you have friends with you. The med-packs randomly appear which is alright, I suppose. If you’re taken out, your friends can easily find a med-pack and go to you and pick you back up. There are some good sides to the game as well. When you use it, you only get 5 seconds to get away from her. Even if you have the doors closed, she will come through them with her lanky arms and legs. The game is marketed as “run and hide”, however, hiding doesn’t really work. While the game is a lot of fun, there are a few things I didn’t like too much. In terms of the goats, well, like I said you have to sacrifice ten of them. You’ll also find keys around the house that come in handy. In terms of the story, there are little notes you can read that give some background on what the hell went wrong with the cult leader. There are a number of great jump scares if you do get caught, as you’d expect. I may have said some nasty curse words (beeped out in the video). I’ll admit there was a part where the cult leader caught me and it scared the hell outta me. I played the game with two of my friends and we had a real laugh. A nice touch.Īlso, the more goats you sacrifice, the faster, and crazier she gets. You can also take out her little minions (demons?) that are crawling around as well. Point the flashlight at her while in that mode and it will prevent her from running at you, stunning her for a few seconds, where you can quickly get out of Dodge. Luckily, the flashlight is somewhat useful, as you can turn it to “UV” mode. Oh, and you’re also only armed with a flashlight. Once you do the first goat sacrifice, you end up automatically being chased by her. The cult leader is all sorts of scary and crazy. You’ll see items such as hay, petrol/gas, a goat, and med packs. You first have to go into the house to explore around.
